Driving from Marrakech to Ouarzazate: what to expect

The road

Route N9 leaves Marrakech across the plain, then climbs through Berber villages and terraced fields to the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 m, one of the highest paved passes in North Africa. The road has been widened in recent years but still has long sections of hairpins, slow trucks and occasional roadworks. On the south side it drops into a dry, ochre landscape of kasbahs before Ouarzazate.

Comfort & conditions

Allow the full drive time or more — speed is limited on the bends. If you suffer from motion sickness, sit in the front and take medication before leaving. In winter (December–February) snow can close the pass for a few hours; your driver checks conditions before departure.

Every vehicle is air-conditioned, and your driver loads the luggage and helps with the bags at both ends.

Stops worth making

  • Taddert

Mountain village below the pass with cafés serving tagine — the classic lunch or tea stop.

  • Tizi n'Tichka summit

Pull over at the top for photos of the High Atlas ridges.

  • Aït Ben Haddou

The UNESCO-listed fortified village, a short detour before Ouarzazate and a famous film location.

Private driver vs. train, bus and grand taxi for Marrakech to Ouarzazate

  • Private driver

Door to door in 4h 00m, with stops when you want them and a fixed price per vehicle agreed before you travel.

  • Train

No railway crosses the High Atlas.

  • CTM / Supratours bus

Around 4½–5 hours, with no photo stops and no detour to Aït Ben Haddou.

  • Grand taxi

Shared grand taxis run the N9, but six passengers on mountain hairpins is uncomfortable.
