Driving from Marrakech to Merzouga: what to expect

The road

The journey follows the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate, then the N10 east along the 'Road of a Thousand Kasbahs' through the Dades Valley and Tinghir, before heading via Erfoud and Rissani to Merzouga. Driving it in one go is a very long day, so most travellers split it over two days with a night in the Dades Valley or Todra Gorge.

Comfort & conditions

This is a long time in the car, so groups should consider the Van for extra legroom. Desert temperatures range from over 40 °C in summer to near freezing on winter nights. A one-way transfer drops you at your camp's meeting point in Merzouga; to keep the same driver for a multi-day desert loop, ask about full-day hire.

Every vehicle is air-conditioned, and your driver loads the luggage and helps with the bags at both ends.

Stops worth making

  • Aït Ben Haddou

The UNESCO-listed ksar near Ouarzazate — a natural first-morning stop.

  • Dades Gorge

Rock formations and the famous zig-zag road — the usual overnight stop.

  • Todra Gorge

Towering canyon walls near Tinghir, an easy walk from the road.

Private driver vs. train, bus and grand taxi for Marrakech to Merzouga

  • Private driver

Door to door in 9h 30m, with stops when you want them and a fixed price per vehicle agreed before you travel.

  • Train

    No railway reaches the Sahara.

  • Long-distance bus

Cheap but tiring — 10 hours or more with stops, and it drops you in town, not at your camp.

  • Group desert tour

Budget multi-day tours bundle transport, but you share a minibus on a fixed schedule.
