The short answer
A shared grand taxi is the budget choice for short hops if you travel light and don't mind squeezing in. For longer journeys, families or anyone with luggage, a private driver is safer and far more comfortable — Marrakech to Essaouira is €90 (990 MAD) by Sedan, and Marrakech to Casablanca €170 (1,870 MAD) by Mercedes Van, per vehicle.
Side-by-side comparison
| Factor | Shared grand taxi | Private Série T driver |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | Traditionally six passengers — four in the back, two sharing the front seat. | Just your group, with a seat and seatbelt for everyone. |
| Departure | Leaves the taxi station only when every seat is sold. | Leaves from your hotel at the time you choose. |
| Air-conditioning | Often none — windows down in summer heat. | Air-conditioned sedans and Mercedes vans as standard. |
| Luggage | Limited boot space; large bags may go on the roof. | Free luggage, loaded for you. |
| Price | Unmetered — per-seat prices on set routes, negotiated for private hire. | Fixed price per vehicle, agreed before you travel. |
| Licensing & insurance | Public transport licence; rear seatbelts are often missing or unusable. | Licensed tourist transport (Série T) with commercial passenger insurance. |
How grand taxis work
Grand taxis run fixed routes between towns from dedicated taxi stations. You pay per seat and wait until the car is full. On popular routes that can be minutes; on quiet ones, much longer. You can also buy every seat to travel privately, but the price is negotiated and the vehicle is the same.
Safety and comfort on long journeys
Many grand taxis are older vehicles driven fast on long days. Six adults in a sedan, no air-conditioning and missing rear seatbelts make a three-hour journey hard work — and on mountain roads like the Tizi n'Tichka, comfort and a cautious driver matter.
A private Série T vehicle is licensed specifically for tourist transport, insured for passengers, and driven by a professional who stops when you want to.
When a grand taxi is a good choice
For short hops between neighbouring towns, solo travellers with a backpack, or anyone wanting a slice of everyday Moroccan life, a shared grand taxi is cheap and quick. Agree the fare before you get in, and sit in the back if you can.

Millions of Moroccans use them every day. The concerns for visitors are crowding, older vehicles, fast driving and missing rear seatbelts — which matter most on long or mountain journeys.
Traditionally six passengers: four across the back seat and two sharing the front passenger seat. You can pay for extra seats to have more room.
Per person, yes. But a private driver is priced per vehicle — Marrakech to Essaouira is €90 (990 MAD) by Sedan for up to 3 people — so for couples, families and groups the difference is smaller than it looks.
