Driving from Marrakech to Essaouira: what to expect
The road
The route heads west across the plains towards Chichaoua, then follows the two-lane R207 through argan forest to the coast. The R207 is well surfaced but single-carriageway, so overtaking trucks is slower than on a motorway. Essaouira's medina is pedestrian, so your driver stops at the gate or car park nearest your riad.
Comfort & conditions
Essaouira can be 10 °C or more cooler than Marrakech in summer and is windy year-round — pack a light jacket. There are no mountain passes. Many travellers do it as a day trip; ask for full-day hire if you want the driver to wait and bring you back the same evening.
